Summary, etc. |
Follow Milo the koala bear as he finds out about what his mum is up to in hospital and how nurse Dotty and her colleagues are looking after her. The book is aimed at young children who have a parent, grandparent or relative in hospital, and to alleviate their anxiety about what their loved one might be experiencing. The text is in simple rhyme, making it ideal for reading aloud with young children. The illustrations are simple but precise with bold colours, and include details that give plenty of scope to get conversations going. For example, the hand wash and instructions on the fourth page of the story will be recognisable to most children, and can act as a starter point from which to move to discussion of unfamiliar equipment and spaces. Heart monitors, blood tests, and x-rays are all gently explained. All the characters are depicted as friendly animals: Dotty the nurse is an owl, the other staff members include a giraffe and a turtle, helping to make health care teams less intimidating to children. Milo's mother is discharged at the end and returns home, recovered, to her son. <br/>Audience: Child 2 - 5 years; Adult caregiver; Health care professional |
