When a close friend or family member dies, it can be sad for kids and difficult for them to express the big feelings they are experiencing. This book will help explain in a gentle way that death is a natural complement to life and that grief and a sense of loss are normal feelings to have following the death of a loved one. The illustration shows a conventional scene of a coffin being shouldered into a church, which may at first seem exclusionary, but a few pages later the text elaborates that death is understood differently in different cultures, and that many cultures share the belief that the soul survives death. The glossary at the back expands on what a funeral involves to include an explanation of cremation. Pages 28 and 29 are aimed at adults trying to help children with bereavement grief and give advice, plus some suggestions for further reading and organisations which may be able to assist locally.
