The Long and Short of It follows the stories of Isabel and Emma, two girls with "hair problems." Isabel wants her hair to be longer; Emma has lost her hair because of cancer treatment and would just like it back. Each girl's experience leads her to a new understanding: for Isabel, the realisation that she can help someone through giving her hair away; for Emma, the emotion of losing her hair while finding that others want to help. Although Isabel relishes having long hair that she can style and adorn with bows and ribbons, she decides to donate her hair when her best friend tells her about an organisation that makes wigs for sick children who have lost their own hair. Emma feels conspicuous and embarrassed when she becomes bald, and the book shows how relieved she is to get a wig and also a ponytail pack. When Emma recovers, she plans to donate her hair to help others who are going through the same experience. Shennen Bersani's illustrations are lush, detailed, and emotionally charged. This book will be useful to children undergoing cancer treatment and will also encourage those who are not to be sensitive towards children in this situation. The book is based on the stories of two real children, which may add to its appeal: their photographs and experiences are detailed on page 39.
