This book is aimed at parents and guardians who need to explain to a young child what a brain tumour is and what can be expected in terms of the effects of the illness and its treatment. It is told from the point of view of a teddy bear nurse who works at a hospital, and she describes the experience of Lilly and her father, who receives a cancer diagnosis. This book is visually very engaging, using large page spreads of soft-focus photographs of real settings, including treatment-specific locations such as CAT scan machines, consultant rooms and radiation equipment, coupled with public areas that are or may become familiar to family members, such as lobby areas with ward signage and hospital waiting rooms. These photographic backgrounds are overlaid with evocative illustrations of people (and Nurse Ted), merging the fictional with the real. The book aims to demystify cancer through story and illustration. From the very first, Nurse Ted is frank and admits that people do not always recover but that the hospital can still give comfort to patients. The reader is then introduced to Lilly and her parents, and their story unfolds, including an age-appropriate explanation of what cancer is, and shows what radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery involve. A glossary of terms and side effects is included, answers to questions children may have, and a guide aimed specifically at parents and carers. Colour picturebook with short text.
