The illustrations are simple but precise with bold colours, and include details that give plenty of scope to get conversations going. For example, the hand wash and instructions on the fourth page of the story will be recognisable to most children, and can act as a starter point from which to move to discussion of unfamiliar equipment and spaces. All the characters are depicted as friendly animals: Dotty the nurse is an owl, the other staff members include a giraffe and a turtle, helping to make health care teams less intimidating to children.
