520 _aTen-year-old Devin sets out to kick cancer's butt. With the help of his friends, cancer won't have a chance. The thing is, though, that none of the boys know exactly what cancer is. After a visit to the library, the boys learn that there are scientists working every day to find a cure for cancer. Join Devin and his friends on their mission to pull together as one and let cancer know that it has messed with the wrong kid. And if they are able to get their classmates, parents, and neighborhood to join them in the fight as well, cancer is going to be in big trouble. Devin and his friends approach Devin's cancer of the kidney diagnosis with much more confidence than either of his parents: his father repeatedly breaks down in tears and blames himself irrationally for his son's illness, and is completely hostile to the suggestion of seeking professional help for his feelings. Both parents are catastrophisers, whereas their son and his friends outshine them in their collective determination to "kick cancer's butt". They unite their community through fund-raising activities and have fun along the way. The story is told from the point of view of four boys around the age of ten, who are best friends with Devin, and so may appeal to children of a similar age or in a similar situation. Experiences of hospital stays and cancer treatment do feature but are secondary to the support of friendship which is central to the story. Short novel. Audience: Child 5 – 11 (with an accompanying adult to help younger readers)
