520 | _aIt's time for five-year-old Molly's yearly check-up with Dr. Ryan, and she's scared she'll have to get a shot. Dr. Ryan uses gentle redirection, humor, and imagination to help Molly relax and have fun during each step of the exam. As each body part gets checked, Molly is invited to imagine herself as a different animal. In the end, when asked if she is ready for the shot she does in fact have to get, she responds, "Lions aren't scared of shots!" This picturebook also demystifies certain routine medical procedures such as blood pressure checks (the nurse explains that this is to see how strongly Molly's heart is pumping), and eye test reading charts. Each scenario is followed by a two-page spread of Molly imagining herself as the animal that the doctor has likened her to. For example, when Molly has to touch her toes and then stand straight, Dr. Ryan remarks that she is a giraffe and can probably see over everyone's head at the cinema, and there is a humourous illustration of Molly with a giraffe's body, sipping a drink down her long giraffe neck. The book also includes a Note to Parents with advice on how to approach children's health care visits to minimise anxiety, fear and anger. Picturebook with colour illustrations. Audience: Child 4 - 7; Adult caregiver; Health care professionals | ||
