520 _aWritten and illustrated by the talented and award-winning author-illustrator Rebecca Cobb, this extraordinary book deals with the loss of a parent from a child's point of view. Perfectly pitched text and evocative artwork explore the many emotions a bereaved child may experience, from anger to guilt and from sadness to bewilderment. And importantly, the book also focuses on the positive - the recognition that the child is still part of a family, and that his memories of his mother are to be treasured. Beautifully illustrated with moments of wonderful warmth and the gentlest humour, Missing Mummy is a touching, honest and helpful book that approaches a difficult subject with great integrity. The text is simple and complements the illustrations which are deceptively simple with a child-like drawing quality. For example, the first double-spread shows the little boy being held by his father in what is presumably a graveyard scene: dominated by dark umbrellas and slanting rain, with the children in bright colours clasped to their father. The narrator's confusion is clear: although to an adult reader this illustration is short-hand for a graveyard setting, the little boy reflects that "Some time ago we said goodbye to Mummy. I am not sure where she is gone." The attention to detail in the illustrations can be appreciated by a young reader individually, or can be used as a prompt for conversations. Colour picturebook with short text. Audience: Child 4 – 8 years.
